I did not like this book very much at all. It is very hard to get through, I still haven't completely finished it (I have about 90 pages left). It is based on a boy Elijah who is the first colored person born free in the small town of Buxton, Canada. As you know slaves didn't have access to a very good education and the author took this fact and ran with it. If you are talking to a person with a low education can be easy because they are actually speaking but when you are reading it you really have no idea what the things they are saying mean.
I have no problem with people that, for whatever reason, don't have an education but I think the author would have benefited from using proper spelling, grammar etc. because it would have been, altogether, easier to read.
Anyway, the story is good, so far but like I said it is hard to read.
Elijah's friend receives money from a wealthy neighbor after he does work for her for several months. He plans on using this money to buy his wife and children out of slavery. There is one problem though, the money is stolen. The real action apparently doesn't start until about the last 100 pages when Elijah decides to go and find who stole his friend's money and get it back.
